Day 10: (04/14) : to 119.6 :: 14.6 miles

This morning we continued our walk through the meadow with neat views of a fog bank in the valley below us, around Lake Henshaw. We passed the famous eagle rock formation and marveled at how eagle like it is! We stopped next to the formation Fe our breakfast and to gaze upon the magnificent views of the meadows, mountains and clouds.

Shortly after breakfast we were run off the trail by a heard of 30 or so cows! They were beautiful black and white spotted cows, but they were big and it was scary to be so close. They were just as scared of us as we were of them and they were running all over the place, above and below the trail to try to get around us! I don’t think I’ve ever been closer to cows and should not like to have another encounter like this. We just stood still and waited for them to go around. I would really have liked to pet one, but didn’t know if they would accept that!

We crossed the highway near Warner Springs, crossed it without stopping and continued on through the massive meadow. Just before reentering the mountains we found a picnic bench that was part of an old abandoned car camping ground. There was no one around to tell us not to enjoy it so we couldn’t resist! In better times we would have delighted in stopping for a refreshment in Warner Springs, but we are grateful to be out here corona virus or not!

All afternoon we followed Agua Caliente Creek into the mountains, fording it many times. We enjoyed the constant access to water and shade. Eventually we gained enough elevation that we could see the valley and meadow below, as we hike about Lost Valley Road. This is a dirt road that we actually drove a few weeks ago on our road trip, so it was neat to see a familiar area from a different perspective. We will now be hiking around some of San Diego County’s highest mountains, Hot Springs Mountain (6,535 feet), which we could see today and Combs Peak (6,193 feet), which we will see tomorrow.

We camped on a high ledge above Lost Valley Road near Lost Valley Spring for access to fine water! We had lovely sunset views over the meadows during dinner. We had the great pleasure of eating delicious mango curry Pinole (cornmeal) patties that I invented, topped with peanut butter.

  1. The eagle rock is quite amazing. I hadn’t heard of it. I guess you have to hike the trail to see it. Not all that close to a road?
