Day 5: (04/04) 48.7-59.7 :: 11 miles

We had planned to take more days off, but heard bad weather is coming, so we rushed back to the trail after just a day off so we could complete another few days before getting snowed out of the higher elevations. We packed a picnic in the mini van and my mom drove us back to the trail. We ate in the back of the van at the trailhead and started walking around 2. We completed a swift 11 miles before dark. We usually don’t average more than about 2 miles per hour with our frequent stops, but today we did 2.5! Wow! All afternoon we had views thousands of feet down to the desert below.

  1. I have flown along the edge of this Laguna Escarpment in helicopters, on the way down to Mexico for off-road races. It is almost indescribably dramatic - a fall off almost straight down, six thousand feet at least, from pines to the Borrego desert. In the 1880s, the old Butterfield Stage Coach Line somehow found a way to traverse that grade. I’m sure few people have ever had the view you had.
