Day 8 (04/07) 91.2-101.2 :: 10 miles

It became more rainy and misty today and many of the surrounding mountains were obscured from view by clouds and fog. It was only light rain though and only occasional, so we stayed dry and warm in our rain gear. We only had to hike 10 miles to Montezuma Valley Road where my sister May is picking us up, so we packed just a few liters of water and our food bag was near empty so we were able to go fast in the absence of much weight. We enjoyed a new chaparral tree that we have learned is called Ribbonwood, with ribbon like strips of red bark that hang from the trunk. In the rain the trees smell just like baby wipes!! Nature sure is neat!

We were glad when we reached the road and could take refuge in May’s car and got to receive a banquet of food! Breakfast today was dry figs and protein bars with nut butter spread on them, so we were hungry! She made us cookies and brought us grapes and apples and chips and salsa! Mmmm!!! The storm seemed much worse from the car and we actually saw several bad accidents on the way back! The storm is forecasted to last several days, delivering a good amount of snow to some of the higher elevation areas of the trail. We are very lucky to get to go home and rest.

We passed the 100 mile mark today!
