05/17/2020 Zero in Wrightwood

Leisure is had today. We have homemade pancake breakfast, sort food, go to the coffee shop and take walks. In the afternoon it is time for my mom to drive back to San Diego. We enjoy Wrightwood and our apartment so much that we wish we could stay another day and dream of coming back again.
  

I request my mom mix up all the dry ingredients for cornmeal packages at home and bring along the wet ingredients so we could have pancakes for breakfast with peanut butter syrup and berries. It was very convenient that the kitchen had an electric griddle!

Enjoying more food on our balcony, grilled peanut butter and banana sandwiches on great harvest bread! Great Harvest is a bakery chain in the west that makes the best bread!

Some prepared foods from Jimbo’s for dinner that my Mom brought for us. Jimbo’s is our favorite grocery store in San Diego. This will be our last meal from there until we go back to San Diego in the fall!

Friday 5/15 We wait until morning to get water from the cache since we had enough to get us through the night. I stay at the campsite while Jeff goes over to get the water. It it less than a minute walk. Jeff saw a hiker go by just a few minutes before, and when he arrives to the cache that hiker was squatted down pooping within view of the cache! Jeff grabs one of the water jugs and walks away with it to give the guy some privacy. Shortly after, another guy shows up. Both guys are super ultra light backpackers, and one of them is just hiking a section and hasn’t brought any sleeping gear! Apparently in that situation, you just walk until you’re exhausted and lay down where ever until you get too cold and then you get up and walk again! The two hikers begin to brag back and forth about who could be more ultra light and Jeff uses that opportunity to slip away. Day 26: (05/13): to 329.5 :: 18.4 miles

Wednesday 5/13 We walk only half an hour this morning before reaching a wide open view of civilization. We had more energy last night and could have hiked further but we are glad we didn’t because there are no campsites for miles. Now we can see a few high desert towns in the distance, a busy railroad line, a large valley, a flood control dam and the far off mountains near Wrightwood that we will be hiking in the next week. After about an hour we are walking below the dam and crossing Deep Creek for the last time. We stop for breakfast with a scenic view of the river flowing into a tunnel in the massive rock wall of the dam and disappearing. We hike above the valley along a ridge until lunch time, with views of the snowy Mt Baldy, a popular LA ski area, and a few other high peaks nearby. Because the PCT take the scenic and gentle route everywhere it goes, we often can see where we trying to get to for days and sometimes even weeks! Day 31: (05/19): to 383.1 :: 13.2 miles

The day starts off clear and looks promising, but the clouds increase as the day goes on and stubbornly hang around the area in which we are hiking. The view to the East is clear most of the day, but there is a wall of clouds blocking the view to the west. Again we wish we’d stayed in town one more night so that we would have an additional day to let the clouds clear before climbing Mt Baden Powell. But we didn’t stay an extra night, and we have nothing better to do than walk, so we keep moving forward. We climb 38 switchbacks up the face of the mountain. Near the top, there is still snow, making it impossible to find the last 10 or so switch backs, so we go straight up. My backpack is heavy with food bank oranges and going straight up would be tiring even without a backpack! At the top it is chilly and breezy.
